The first-person plural nosotros ‘we’ across Spanish media genres.Miguel Ángel Aijón Oliva & María José Serrano - 2013 - Discourse and Communication 7 (4):409-433.
The purpose of this article is to analyze Spanish first-person plural subjects as a cognitively grounded grammatical choice serving various discursive functions. Both the expressed and omitted variants of the subject will be considered, even if omission is by far the more frequent choice in Spanish and the more communicatively versatile one. The particularly vague reference of omitted nosotros ‘we’ – always involving an extension of the self towards a wider notional scope – results in a remarkable variety of possible (...)

    Triangulated Quasi-Experiments.Miguel R. Olivas-Luján - 2005 - Proceedings of the International Association for Business and Society 16:373-375.
Given the difficulties in Business & Society research to establish causality, one of the crucial tasks in the sciences, a Quasi-Experimental Approach (QEA) is suggested as a research design suitable to a variety of questions in the field. Triangulation is also suggested as a complement to the QEA way to tease out plausible alternative explanations. A recently published study is used as an illustrative example.

Where Financial Markets and Government Failed, Emerging Micro Credit Programs are Succeeding.Gustavo Barboza, Miguel Olivas-Lujan & Sandra Trejos - 2007 - Proceedings of the International Association for Business and Society 18:371-376.
Micro Credit programs lend money to poor borrowers using innovative mechanisms such as group lending under joint liability while successfully accounting forthe presence of asymmetric information in underdeveloped financial markets. MC Programs have achieved what the conventional financial institutions and the government have not been able to: lend to the poor, recuperate loans and have a positive impact in poverty reduction. While loan recuperation is high (95% for our focus group ALSOL Chiapas), administrative costs also remain high. Social Responsible Savers (...)

A critical review and meta-analysis of the unconscious thought effect in medical decision making.Miguel A. Vadillo, Olga Kostopoulou & David R. Shanks - 2015 - Frontiers in Psychology 6:144654.
Based on research on the increasingly popular unconscious thought effect (UTE), it has been suggested that physicians might make better diagnostic decisions after a period of distraction than after an equivalent amount of time of conscious deliberation. However, published attempts to demonstrate the UTE in medical decision making have yielded inconsistent results. In the present study, we report the results of a meta-analysis of all the available evidence on the UTE in medical decisions made by expert and novice clinicians. The (...)

    Illuminating flowers: CONSTANS induces LEAFY expression.Miguel A. Blázquez - 1997 - Bioessays 19 (4):277-279.
Higher plants must undergo a major developmental switch, the transition to flowering, if they are to successfully complete their life cycle. In many plants, the crucial decision of when to begin to produce flowers is primarily controlled by environmental signals. The process of floral induction involves the integration of the activities of two types of genes: those that control flowering time as a response to the environment as well as an endogenous clock, and those that determine the floral identity of (...)

Peasant Farming Systems, Agricultural Modernization, and the Conservation of Crop Genetic Resources in Latin America.Miguel A. Altieri & M. Kat Anderson - 1992 - In P. L. Fiedler & S. K. Jain (eds.), Conservation Biology. Springer Us. pp. 49-64.
Many traditional agroecosystems found in Latin America constitute major in situ repositories of crop genetic diversity. This native germplasm is crucial to developing countries and industrialized nations alike. Native varieties expand and renew the crop genetic resources of developed countries while also performing well under the ecological and economic conditions of the traditional farms where they are grown. With agricultural modernization and environmental degradation, crop genetic diversity is decreasing in peasant agricultural systems. Research is urgently needed to document rates and (...)

Helisaeus Roeslin’s manuscript Speculum et harmonia mundi, Das ist Wellt Spiegel Erster Theil was conceived as part of a broader project comprising a Speculum ecclesiae as well as a Speculum naturae. This project was connected with a Chronology aiming to establish the precise date of the most important events in history as well as to advance some conjectures about the approaching eschatological future. This article presents some recent discoveries that shed new light on Roeslin’s chronological work after 1579, most importantly (...)

    Mersenne's critique of Giordano Bruno's conception of the relation between God and the universe: A reappraisal.Miguel A. Granada - 2010 - Perspectives on Science 18 (1):pp. 26-49.
We re-examine Mersenne's critique of Giordano Bruno concerning the question of the extension of the universe and the plurality of worlds as well as that of universal animation. For this, it is necessary to distinguish, especially in the examination of the first question, the strictly cosmological problem from its metaphysical and theological foundation in which the relation between God and the universe is resolved. Mersenne's critique fundamentally concerns this second side of our problem, according to his conviction that Bruno repeats (...)
